Future Tense

The future tense is used to indicate that an action will happen in the future. The future tense is formed by adding grammatical endings to the infinitive of the verb.

The following table shows the future tense for the three classes of verbs.

hablar comer vivir
yo hablaré comeré viviré
hablarás comerás vivirás
él, ella hablará comerá vivirá
nosotros hablaremos comeremos viviremos
vosotros hablaréis comeréis viviréis
ellos, ellas hablarán comerán vivirán

Examples

Hablaré con el doctor. I will speak to the doctor.
¿A qué hora estarás en casa? At what time will you be home?
Ella explicará. She will explain.
Correremos. We will run.
Te veré mañana. I'll see you tomorrow.

Often in Spanish the structure ir a + [verb] is used to indicate that an action will happen very soon. The verb ir is very irregular. Have a look at the Present Tense of Spanish Verbs lesson to review how to use the verb ir in the present tense.

Examples

Va a llover. It's going to rain.
¿Qué vas a hacer? What are you going to do?
Vamos a salir ahora. We're going to leave now.

Conditional Tense

The conditional tense indicates uncertainty that an action will happen, or that an action will happen only if certain conditions are met. It is also used to make polite requests. In English this tense is formed by using 'would' in front of the verb. In Spanish the conditional tense is created by adding grammatical endings to the infinitive of the verb.

The following table shows the conditional tense for the three classes of verbs.

hablar comer vivir
yo hablaría comería viviría
hablarías comerías vivirías
él, ella hablaría comería viviría
nosotros hablaríamos comeríamos viviríamos
vosotros hablaríais comeríais viviríais
ellos, ellas hablarían comerían vivirían

Examples

¿Te gustaría ir conmigo? Would you like to go with me?
Yo hablaría contigo, pero estás demasiado ocupado. I would talk with you, but you are too busy.

Ella estaría tocando el piano, pero está demasiado cansada. She would be playing piano, but she is too tired.
