The Abandoned Cabin

Here is a story in both German and English about three friends who get lost while hiking and find an abandoned cabin. The English version of the story is shown beside the German version to help your understanding of the story. Matt, Hannah und Sarah waren beste Freunde, die das Wandern liebten. Sie beschlossen, ein Wochenende damit zu verbringen, die Berge in der Nähe ihrer Stadt zu erkunden. Sie packten ihre Rucksäcke mit Essen, Wasser, Zelten und Schlafsäcken und machten sich früh am Morgen auf den Weg.	Matt, Hannah, and Sarah were best friends who loved hiking. They decided to spend a weekend exploring the mountains near their town. They packed their backpacks with food, water, tents, and sleeping bags, and set off early in the morning.

They followed a marked trail and set up their camp near a small stream. They cooked some dinner, sang some songs, and told some stories around the campfire. They went to sleep feeling happy and relaxed.

The weather became stormy and it started to rain heavily. The trail became muddy and slippery, and they lost their way. They tried to use their phones, but they had no signal. They started to panic and argue with each other.
"Großartig, einfach großartig. Wir sind mitten im Nirgendwo verloren, ohne Karte, ohne Telefon, ohne nichts. Wessen Idee war das überhaupt?" Matt beschwerte sich.	"Great, just great. We're lost in the middle of nowhere, with no map, no phone, no nothing. Whose idea was this anyway?" Matt complained.
"Hey, gib mir nicht die Schuld. Du warst derjenige, der überhaupt wandern wollte. Und du warst derjenige, der gesagt hat, dass wir keinen Führer brauchen. Du hast gesagt, du wüsstest den Weg." Hannah erwiderte.	"Hey, don't blame me. You were the one who wanted to go hiking in the first place. And you were the one who said we didn't need a guide. You said you knew the way." Hannah retorted.
"Leute, Leute, beruhigt euch. Kämpfen hilft uns nicht weiter. Wir müssen zusammenhalten und einen Weg hier raus finden." Sarah mischte sich ein.	"Guys, guys, calm down. Fighting won't help us. We need to stick together and find a way out of here." Sarah intervened.
Der Sturm tobte und die drei Freunde zitterten vor Kälte. Sie waren stundenlang im Wald gewandert, hatten sich aber verirrt. Sie hatten gehofft, eine Försterstation oder einen Zeltplatz zu finden, aber alles, was sie fanden, war eine dunkle, unheimliche Hütte an einem See. Die Hütte sah alt und verlassen aus. Die Fenster waren mit Brettern vernagelt, das Dach hing durch und die Tür hing in den Angeln.	The storm was raging, and the three friends were shivering in the cold. They had been hiking in the forest for hours, but they had lost their way. They had hoped to find a ranger station or a campsite, but all they found was a dark and eerie cabin by a lake. The cabin looked old and abandoned. The windows were boarded up, the roof was sagging, and the door was hanging from its hinges.
"Wow, seht euch das an!" rief Matt aus. "Glaubt ihr, da wohnt jemand?"	"Whoa, look at that!" Matt exclaimed. "Do you think anyone lives there?"
"Das bezweifle ich", sagte Hannah. "Es sieht aus, als ob es schon lange verlassen ist."	"I doubt it," Hannah said. "It looks like it's been deserted for a long time."
"Vielleicht sollten wir es uns ansehen", schlug Sarah vor.	"Maybe we should check it out," Sarah suggested.
"Es könnte gefährlich sein", warnte Hannah. "Man weiß nie, was da drin sein könnte. Vielleicht spukt es dort, oder es ist rattenverseucht oder mit Fallen versehen."	"It might be dangerous," Hannah warned. "You never know what could be inside. Maybe it's haunted, or infested with rats, or booby-trapped."
"Komm schon, sei nicht so ein Angsthase", stichelte Sarah. "Es ist doch nur eine alte Hütte. Was kann schon passieren?" Sie ging auf die Hütte zu, gefolgt von Matt, der neugierig war. Hannah zögerte, beschloss dann aber, sich ihnen anzuschließen. Sie wollte nicht allein am See zurückbleiben.	"Come on, don't be such a scaredy-cat," Sarah teased. "It's just an old cabin. What's the worst that could happen?" She walked towards the cabin, followed by Matt, who was curious. Hannah hesitated, but then decided to join them. She didn't want to be left alone by the lake.

They knocked on the door, but there was no answer. They tried to open it, and it was unlocked. They pushed the door open. It creaked loudly, and a cloud of dust flew out. They coughed and waved their hands, trying to clear the air. They stepped inside, and looked around. The cabin was small and dark, with a single room. It was dusty, cobwebbed, and the floor was covered with dirt and debris, but it had a fireplace with some wood beside it, a table with some chairs, a couch, a bookshelf, and a bed. The walls were decorated with paintings and photos. They decided to stay there for the night, hoping that the storm would pass and they could resume their search for the trail in the morning.

"Wow, das ist ja eine wahre Fundgrube", sagte Matt und nahm ein Buch in die Hand. "Seht euch das an, das ist eine Erstausgabe von Der Hobbit. Das muss ein Vermögen wert sein."	"Wow, this is like a treasure trove," Matt said, picking up a book. "Look at this, it's a first edition of The Hobbit. This must be worth a fortune."
"Seht euch das an," sagte Hannah und deutete auf ein Foto. "Es ist ein Bild von einem Mann und einer Frau. Sie sehen glücklich aus. Glaubt ihr, sie haben hier gelebt?"	"Look at this," Hannah said, pointing at a photo. "It's a picture of a man and a woman. They look happy. Do you think they lived here?"
"Vielleicht", sagte Sarah und sah sich einen Zeitungsausschnitt an. "Aber seht euch das an, das ist eine Schlagzeile von vor zehn Jahren. Da steht 'Vermisster Wanderer tot aufgefunden'. Und da ist ein Bild von demselben Mann."	"Maybe," Sarah said, looking at a newspaper clipping. "But look at this, it's a headline from ten years ago. It says 'Missing Hiker Found Dead'. And there's a picture of the same man."
Sie erschraken und lasen den Artikel. Darin stand, dass es sich bei dem Mann um einen berühmten Forscher handelte, der zu einer Soloexpedition in die Berge aufgebrochen und nicht zurückgekehrt war. Seine Leiche wurde von einem Suchtrupp in der Nähe einer Klippe gefunden. Er war gestürzt und hatte sich das Genick gebrochen. Der Artikel erwähnte auch, dass er eine Frau zurückgelassen hatte, die in der Hütte am See lebte.	They gasped, and read the article. It said that the man was a famous explorer, who had gone on a solo expedition in the mountains, and never returned. His body was found by a search party, near a cliff. He had fallen and broken his neck. The article also mentioned that he had left behind a wife, who lived in the cabin by the lake.
"Das ist so traurig", sagte Hannah und hatte Mitleid mit der Frau.	"That's so sad," Hannah said, feeling sorry for the woman.
"Vielleicht ist sie noch hier", sagte Sarah und sah sich um. "Vielleicht versteckt sie sich irgendwo, oder sie beobachtet uns."	"Maybe she's still here," Sarah said, looking around. "Maybe she's hiding somewhere, or watching us."
"Sei nicht albern", sagte Matt kopfschüttelnd. "Sie ist wahrscheinlich schon vor langer Zeit gegangen. Oder vielleicht ist sie auch gestorben."	"Don't be silly," Matt said, shaking his head. "She probably left a long time ago. Or maybe she died too."
Sie spürten ein Frösteln in der Luft und beschlossen, die Hütte zu verlassen. Sie gingen zurück zur Tür und versuchten, sie zu öffnen. Aber sie rührte sich nicht. Sie war verschlossen.	They felt a chill in the air, and decided to leave the cabin. They walked back to the door, and tried to open it. But it wouldn't budge. It was locked.

They eventually calmed down, and realized that at least they were warm and dry. They decided that they might as well spend the night in the cabin, since the storm was still raging, and try and find a way out in the morning.

Am nächsten Morgen erwachten sie bei klarem Himmel und strahlendem Sonnenschein. Hannah versuchte erneut, die Tür zu öffnen, und diesmal ging sie auf. Eine Welle der Hoffnung durchströmte sie. Sie packten ihre Sachen und verließen die Hütte. Jeder von ihnen erinnerte sich an Bruchstücke schrecklicher Träume und überzeugte sich, dass sie alle nur geträumt hatten, dass sie in der Hütte eingesperrt waren.	The next morning, they woke up to a clear sky and a bright sun. Hannah tried the door again, and this time it opened. They felt a surge of hope. They packed their things, and left the cabin. They each remembered fragments of terrifying dreams, and convinced themselves that the had all just dreamed that they had been locked inside the cabin.
Sie gingen am See entlang und fanden bald den Weg. Sie folgten ihm und erreichten ihr Auto. Erleichtert und glücklich fuhren sie in ihre Stadt zurück. Sie hatten eine beängstigende Situation überstanden und ein unvergessliches Erlebnis gehabt. Außerdem hatten sie etwas über sich und ihre Freundschaft gelernt.	They walked along the lake, and soon found the trail. They followed it, and reached their car. They drove back to their town, feeling relieved and happy. They had survived a scary situation, and had a memorable experience. They had also learned something about themselves and their friendship.
