Adverbs of Frequency

Introduction

In this lesson, you'll learn how to use the English adverbs of frequency. You'll also learn some useful adverb sentence templates.

The lesson starts with a short conversation between Sarah and Cathy who are shopping for a new shirt.

Cathy needs a new shirt, so she and Sarah walk into a clothing store.

Sarah: This t-shirt is very nice.

Cathy: Yeah, but it's too small.

Sarah: How about this blouse?

Cathy: I don't like the colour.

Sarah: These shirts are on sale and they are very cheap.

Cathy: I like the blue shirt and the red shirt.

Sarah: I think I want to buy one of these shirts too.

Cathy: Which color do you like?

Sarah: I like the white shirt.

Cathy: Let's go buy them.

Adverbs of Frequency

When talking about routines and habits, adverbs of frequency are often used. The following table shows these adverbs ordered from most frequent to least frequent.

Examples

Listen They always go to the store on Monday. Ils vont toujours au magasin le lundi.
Listen I'm never late. Je ne suis jamais en retard.
Listen She never drinks coffee. Elle ne boit jamais de café.
Listen I often drink tea in the afternoon. Je bois souvent du thé l'après-midi.

Sentence Templates

A very common sentence template in English is:
subject + be very + adjective.

The subject of a sentence can be a noun or pronoun.

Examples

The pizza is very good. La pizza est très bonne.
We are very hungry. Nous avons très faim.
I am very happy. Je suis très heureux.
She is very smart. Elle est très intelligente.
The TV is very expensive. La télévision est très coûteuse.
The store is not very busy. Le magasin n'est pas très occupé.

Another common sentence template in English is:
subject + be too + adjective.

Examples

The coffee is too cold. Le café est trop froid.
I am too tired. Je suis trop fatigué.
The TV is too expensive. La télévision est trop coûteuse.
Is the TV too expensive? Le téléviseur est-il trop cher?
The TV is not too expensive. Le téléviseur n'est pas trop cher.

Here are some more very common sentence templates that use the verb be, adjectives and adverbs.

  • subject + be really + adjective.
  • subject + be quite + adjective.
  • subject + be so + adjective.
  • be + subject + really so + adjective?
  • subject + be pretty + adjective.

Similar templates can be used with the other linking verbs.

Examples

She is really happy. Elle est vraiment heureuse.
He is quite tall. Il est assez grand.
You are so nice! Tu es si gentil!
Is it really so hard? Est-il vraiment si difficile?
The coffee is pretty strong. Le café est assez fort.
The cookies are so good! Les cookies sont si bons!
It was pretty easy. C'était assez facile.
She seems really nice. Elle semble vraiment sympa.
I feel so tired. Je suis si fatigué.
The ice feels so cold. La glace est si froide.
Does it really look so bad? Est-il vraiment l'air si mauvais?
They look pretty tired. Ils ont l'air très fatigués.
